What Welcome Looks Like
Currently, in Afghanistan, the Taliban is hunting and killing Afghans who support the United States’ anti-terrorism efforts within their country. As a result, Afghan refugees arriving in Bowling Green, Kentucky. These brave individuals risked not only their lives but the lives of their families.
What is a refugee? A refugee is a person who is outside his or her country of nationality and can’t return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of his or her race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. If you recall current events, the United States of America just pulled out of its longest war in history: The war against terrorism in Afghanistan. Why is this significant? The same people we moved in to try to protect in Afghanistan and its neighboring countries are once again being heavily persecuted as the war ended less than three months ago.
Who’s In Charge?
Together with The International Center of Kentucky we hope to help resettle 200 Afghan people. To date, The International Center has helped resettle over 10,000 refugees, victims of human trafficking, and immigrants from 30 countries around the world. This local agency’s sole purpose is to work with local partners and the Department of State and the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants to ensure that people have a support structure that enables them to fully integrate and thrive in the United States.
What Welcome Looks Like
Because of this, our team was given the opportunity earlier this year to partner with this local organization to further their mission. When asked what was the most dire need, the agency replied, “Everyday items, these families are starting with nothing.” So our team made a day of it and decided to fully furnish kitchen necessities for 4 families. From microwaves to kitchen towels we were able to get it all. Our hopes are that our gesture will help these refugee families feel Bowling Green feels a little more like home.
